New fund will help Colorado homeless vets find housing

The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless will announce the establishment of a new Homeless Veterans Housing Fund to support the 1,800 homeless veterans on the streets of Denver. The money will help them find housing quickly and access support services, including treatment for war-related trauma. The coalition’s president believes the fund will help the coalition reach its goal of serving double the number of veterans served last year.

Homes for vets come equipped with support services

Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing offers Section 8 housing vouchers to homeless vets and their families. The program has been around nationally since the early 1990s, but it has remained dormant until recently. King County and Seattle housing authorities, in partnership with the regional Veterans Affairs office, awarded 100 new vouchers under the program. The program combines housing with tailored support services that aid health issues, disabilities, addictions, and financial hardships.

Reaching out to homeless veterans

With an estimated 1,600 Utah military veterans homeless, the Department of Veteran Affairs has scheduled a daylong outreach at a Salt Lake City VA hospital. Vets will receive health care, counseling, benefits and support from other vets who face similar struggles, such as unemployment. The event is intended to help people at the VA and in the community figure out specifically what kind of help veterans need.
